Athena Tall Boots
Athena tall boots are Englander Equestrian's synthetic tall riding boots for lessons, schooling, hacking and first shows. The adult boot is £59.95 in UK 4 to 9, in a Standard or Wide calf. The child boot is £49.95 in child UK 10 to 3. Both zip at the back and have a rubber sole. Prices include VAT.
The Athena family
Athena is the step-up boot in the Englander Equestrian range. Our Gaia jodhpur boots stop at the ankle. Athena tall boots cover the calf, and a full-length zip at the back opens each boot from the top down, so it opens right up to go on and off. Athena is made for the rider who has done the first few lessons, rides most weeks, and wants a tall boot for schooling, hacking and a first show.
There are two boots in the family. Both are black. Both have a synthetic vegan leather upper, a padded interior and a rubber sole. Neither is leather, and neither is waterproof.
- Athena adults tall boots, £59.95. UK 4 to 9. Every size comes in a Standard calf or a Wide calf. A stretch panel runs beside the rear zip.
- Athena childs tall boots, £49.95. Child UK 10 to 3. One calf width. A stretchy calf insert and a full-length rear zip.

Which Athena boot?
Choose by foot size, not by age. A foot of UK 3 or smaller takes the child boot. A foot of UK 4 or larger takes the adult boot, whatever the rider's age.

What wide calf means
A tall boot is cut to a calf measurement as well as a foot size. Calf means the distance around the widest part of the lower leg, in centimetres. On a tall boot it matters as much as the foot size. A boot that fits the foot but will not zip up over the calf is no use to anyone.
Athena adults tall boots come in two calf fits in every size. Standard and Wide share the same foot sizes and the same boot heights. The only difference is the width at the calf. Wide adds 5 cm to the calf range at UK 4 and UK 5, 4 cm at UK 6, and 3 cm at UK 7 to UK 9. So a UK 6 Standard is cut for a calf of 36 to 38.5 cm, and a UK 6 Wide for a calf of 40 to 42.5 cm.
A calf above the Standard range for your size means Wide. Our size-chart graphic calls the narrower fit Regular; it is the same fit this site calls Standard. The child boot comes in one width only.

- Riders having regular lessons who are ready to move from a jodhpur boot to a tall boot.
- Schooling, hacking and lower-level shows.
- Adults with a wider calf who want a tall boot in a Wide fit for under £60.
- Children heading for Pony Club and a first competition. Each Pony Club branch sets its own kit list, so check yours before you buy.
- Anyone who wants a tall boot without leather, that wipes clean after a ride.
Who Athena is not for
- Anyone who needs a waterproof boot. Athena is water-resistant, not waterproof. The Hera country boots are the waterproof boot in our range.

- Riders competing at higher levels who want a top-end competition boot. Athena is built for lower-level shows.
- Children who need a wide calf. The child boot comes in one width.
- Anyone who wants a short boot. The Gaia jodhpur boots are the short boot in our range.
Fit and sizing
Order by your UK size. Athena uses the same size ladder as every Englander Equestrian boot, and that ladder skips some EU numbers. For adults, UK 6 is EU 39 and UK 7 is EU 41; there is no EU 40 in this range. UK 9 is EU 43. For children, UK 10 is EU 28 and UK 11 is EU 30, so there is no EU 29. The child run ends at UK 3 (EU 35) and the adult run starts at UK 4 (EU 37), so there is no EU 36 either.

Care
Wipe the boots down with a damp cloth after each ride and let them dry away from direct heat. There is no leather to feed, so no polish or conditioner is needed. Brush mud and grit off the rear zip before you close it, and never force a zip that sticks.

Questions riders ask
Do I need tall boots for horse riding lessons?
Not for the first few. A short jodhpur boot such as our Gaia jodhpur boots is the simpler and cheaper buy, at £29.95 for adults and £26.95 for children. Once you ride most weeks, or have a first show in the diary, a tall boot such as Athena covers the calf and gives you a long boot for £59.95 (adults) or £49.95 (children).
Are synthetic tall boots any good?
Athena has a synthetic vegan leather upper, a padded interior and a rubber sole, and it wipes clean after a ride. It costs £59.95, and of the 22 adult tall riding boots from other brands that Just Horse Riders had in stock on 7 September 2026, the cheapest was £59.62 and the middle price was £102.91, so the Athena undercuts every one of them. It is not leather, it will not polish up or age like leather, and it is not waterproof. For lessons, schooling and lower-level shows that is a fair trade, and every pair has 90-day returns if you disagree.
Do you make wide calf riding boots under £60?
Yes. Athena adults tall boots are £59.95, and Wide is offered in every size from UK 4 to UK 9 for the same price as Standard. The Wide fit is cut 3 to 5 cm larger at the calf, depending on size; the full table is on the size guide and on the adult product page.
Are Athena tall boots waterproof?
No. The synthetic upper is water-resistant and wipes clean, but Athena is not a waterproof boot and is not made for standing in a wet yard. The waterproof boot in our range is the Hera country boots, which have a 100% waterproof construction with sealed seams.
