Aiya Unicorn Children's Riding Tights

Aiya Unicorn children's riding tights are Englander Equestrian's navy riding tights for children, with a multicolour silicone unicorn print on the side and lower-leg panels and a plain navy front and seat. They share the plain Aiya's full-seat silicone grip, phone pocket on each side and wide covered waistband. £29.95 including VAT, waist sizes 20 to 28 inches.

What you get

These are Aiya riding tights with a unicorn print. The base is navy. The print sits on the side panels, the hip yoke and the lower leg: unicorns, rainbows, clouds, stars, hearts and sweet treats in several colours. The front and the seat are plain navy, so from the front they look like a plain navy tight. The print is silicone, so it adds a little hold wherever a printed panel meets the saddle.

Everything else is the plain Aiya: a four-way stretch knit of 76% nylon and 24% elastane, a wide high-rise waistband (a 5 cm covered band with elastic stitched inside), a drop-in phone pocket on each side, flat seams that are smooth on the inside, double side panels and folded ankle hems. Branding is the same as the rest of the range: ENGLANDER printed down the outer left thigh, small silicone logos on the pocket and the waistband, and a tonal hexagon-E on the centre back of the waistband.

Who they are for

• Children who are learning to ride, or riding regularly at lessons and at the yard, and who want a unicorn print.
• Children with a waist between 20 and 28 inches, which is around 3 to 12 years.
• Parents who want a print that stays on the sides, with a plain navy front and seat.
• Riders who want a full-seat grip, with a little extra hold from the silicone print.

Who they are not for

• Children who want a plain tight. The plain Aiya in navy is the same garment without the print, and £5 less.
• Adults and older teenagers. There are no adult Aiya sizes yet.
• Children with a waist under 20 inches or over 28 inches.
• Anyone whose riding school, yard or show has a dress code that asks for something other than riding tights, or for plain colours. Check with them first.

Why the full seat matters for a learner

Two things hold a child in the saddle on the Unicorn tights. The seat and the inside of each leg to the knee carry the same silicone grip as every Aiya design, and the unicorn print on the side panels is silicone too, so it adds a touch more purchase where it meets the saddle flap. For a child learning to sit to the trot, that makes staying centred and keeping a still lower leg a little easier while balance develops.

None of that is a safety device. Grip is a help; balance, a properly fitted riding hat and a good instructor are what keep a child safe. A hat is essential; ask your riding school what standard it expects.

Fit and sizing

Sizes are by waist in inches, not by age and not by dress size. The size label on each pair reads the waist in inches. The fit is the same as the plain Aiya.

Go by the waist. Measure over a thin layer and choose the closest of the five sizes, which match the plain Aiya in cut and fit. Treat the 3 to 12 years guide as a pointer only. Measuring is explained on the size guide.

Care

The label calls for a 40°C machine wash, separately, with a detergent for delicate fabrics, and no fabric conditioner, softener or bleach. Do not tumble dry; dry slowly and iron on the lowest setting only if needed. It also notes that some colour may come out in the wash and that the fabric is not protected against pilling from rubbing.
